China has resumed issuing all types of visas from March 15, 2023.

We have been waiting for the opening of Chinese borders for a long time, and finally it has become possible. Now many of us who have dreamed of visiting China and getting to know its culture, traditions, and history are looking for ways to obtain a visa.

Don’t rush to part with a large sum of money for agent services, as it seems that you can do everything yourself. At the very least, you can check the agent’s work. In this article, we will explain in detail how to obtain a visa to China and what documents are required for this.

This guide explains visa options specifically for Shaolin Kung Fu students training at Yan Chen Wu Guan. Unlike tourist visas, long-term martial arts training requires proper documentation. We compare the X2 (student), F (visiting)

At first, obtaining a Chinese visa may seem difficult, but if you were told from the start that you only need three documents, two of which you already have, it would be much easier. – Can it really be that simple? – Yes, it can! The other documents will depend on the type of visa you choose. All documents are divided into two parts: general, required for everyone, and additional, depending on the type of visa you are applying for.

General Documents

Prepare your passport and a photo on your computer, which you will later upload and attach to the application. In short, the general documents required for a visa application to China are:

  1. Passport and a copy of the first page
  2. Visa application form (to be filled out on the Chinese embassy website)
  3. Previous visas (can help the consul make a decision in your favor)

Now, let’s look at each item in detail.

Passport and a copy of the first page

Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the date of your visa application.
You also need to have a blank page for the visa.

Visa application form

The visa application form consists of three documents and is filled out on two Chinese embassy websites, in the following order:

1) Visa application form and confirmation page. Fill out the form on http://cova.mfa.gov.cn with accurate and complete information.

2) Schedule an appointment at the embassy – use the application number from the previous step to schedule an appointment on http://avas.cs.mfa.gov.cn, then save and print out the confirmation.

Make sure you have the following documents:

  • Document 1: COVA Application
  • Document 2: Visa Application Form of the People’s Republic of China
  • Document 3: AVAS Confirmation

You need to sign twice, in section 9 of the Visa Application Form and on the Confirmation of Online Visa Application.

Previous visas

* This information can help the consul make a decision in your favor.

If you have previously obtained Chinese visas and are now applying with a new foreign passport that does not have any Chinese visas, you need to provide a copy of your previous passport’s personal data page and a copy of the page with your photo (if they are on separate pages), as well as copies of pages with previous Chinese visas. If your name has changed, you also need to provide an official document proving the name change.

Not Required by Everyone

This is the end of the general list. You can move on to the additional documents, which depends on the type of visa you are applying for. Two points below are often not applicable to citizens, but if you are a citizen that falls under these points, please complete them:

Copies of previous Chinese passports or previous Chinese visas. If you are applying for a Chinese visa for the first time, you must attach your previous Chinese passport and a copy of the page of this passport with your personal information and photo.

If you are applying for a visa in a country where you are not a citizen, you must provide the original and a copy of a valid residence permit or visa, a document confirming your work or student status, or other valid documents confirming your legal residence, issued by the relevant authorities of the country of temporary residence.

Additional Documents (Required)

You will need to prepare additional documents depending on type of visa (the purpose of your trip) you have chosen.

If you are unsure about which type of visa you need for kungfu, it is most likely a tourist visa, which allows you to stay for a maximum of 30 days or X2 visa, which allows you to stay in China for up to 180 days. If you plan to stay in China for more than 180 days, you will need to address this issue on your own. We recommend starting with a short-term stay in China, such as for 1-3 month.

All Types of Visas in China

Issued for visitors to China for tourism purposes

Additional materials needed are either:

  1. Proof of round-trip flight and hotel bookings, itinerary in China, and insurance for the entire stay in China.
  2. Invitation letter issued by a Chinese organization (such as a travel agency) or an individual.

The invitation letter should include the following:

  1. Information about the invitee (full name, gender, date of birth, etc.)
  2. Information about the planned visit (purpose of the trip, dates of arrival and departure, places to be visited, description of the relationship between the invitee and the inviting organization or individual, financial sources to cover expenses)
  3. Information about inviting organization or individual (name, contact phone, address, official seal, signature of legal representative or inviting person).

If the invitation letter is issued by an individual, a copy of their ID must be provided.

For those coming to China for education for not more than 180 days

An original and a copy of the admission notice issued by a Chinese educational institution is required.

  2. Original and photocopy of Chinese Student Visa Application (Form JW201 or Form JW202).

Note: Those granted an “X1” visa must apply for a residence permit within 30 days of entering the country at the entry/exit offices of the local public security authorities in the territory of the intended place of residence.

For those coming to China for commercial and trade activities
  1. Documents related to the activity issued by a Chinese trade partner or an invitation letter for a fair or other events from the inviting organization or individual are needed.
  2. A copy of the business license of the inviting organization;
  3. Official certificate of the invited person.

The invitation letter must include:

  • information about the invitee (full name, gender, date of birth, etc.),
  • the planned visit (purpose of the trip, dates of arrival and departure, places to be visited, description of the relationship between the invitee and inviting organization or individual, and financial sources to cover the expenses),
  • the inviting organization or individual (name, contact phone, address, official seal, signature of legal representative or inviting person).

Note: Those who have PU letters of invitation may be exempt from submitting the documents mentioned in paragraphs 2 and 3.

For those coming to China for work

The following documents is needed:

  1. Notification of work permit for foreigners, if the work period does not exceed 90 days. The applicant must apply for the visa before the date specified in the “Notice of Work Permit”. In other cases, the application will not be accepted.
  2. Permission documents from the competent department of culture and tourism (only for those who come to China for commercial performances) if the performance period does not exceed 90 days. – A “Certificate of Short-Term Work for Foreigners in China” is also required. The application for the visa must be submitted before the start date indicated in the certificate, and the work period cannot exceed the period specified in the certificate.
  3. Certificate of registration of a permanent representative office of an organization from another country (region) issued by the Chinese administrative authority responsible for industry and commerce supervision.
  4. Invitation to conduct activities at offshore oil fields in China issued by a Chinese national company for the exploitation of marine oil resources.

Note: Those who obtain a “Z” visa must apply for a residence permit within 30 days of entering the country by visiting the local public security entry/exit department where they intend to reside.

Issued to members of international transportation crews.

A guarantee letter issued by a foreign transportation company or an invitation letter issued by a relevant department in China.

Note: Other conditions may apply to nationals of certain countries under the “Agreements Between Governments”

Issued to those coming to China for permanent residency

The original and a copy of the foreign citizen’s permanent residence permit issued by the Chinese Ministry of Public Security.

Note: Those who obtain a “D” visa must apply for a residence permit within 30 days of entering China by visiting the local public security entry/exit department where they intend to reside.

Issued to those coming to China for exchange programs, official visits, expeditions, and other non-commercial activities.

A written invitation issued by a relevant organization or individual in China. The invitation must include:

  1. Information about the invitee (full name, gender, date of birth, etc.)
  2. Information about the planned visit (purpose of the trip, dates of arrival and departure, places to be visited, description of the relationship between the invitee and the inviting organization or individual, financial sources to cover expenses)
  3. Information about the inviting organization or individual (name or organization name, contact phone number, address, official seal of the organization, signature of the legal representative or inviting person)
Issued to those transiting through China

An airline (train, ship) ticket with a confirmed date, place, and indication of the further route to the destination country or region

Issued to foreign resident journalists and employees of foreign news organizations in China.

The duration of stay in China exceeds 180 days.

A visa notification letter issued by the Department of Information of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China and an official letter from the media where the journalist works.

The applicant must contact the Press Office of the Embassy or Consulate General of China in advance and complete the necessary formalities.

Note: Those who obtain a “J1” visa must apply for a residence permit within 30 days of entering China by visiting the local public security entry/exit department where they intend to reside.

Issued for foreign journalists who are coming to China for short-term correspondence work.

The stay in China cannot exceed 180 days.

An official visa notification letter issued by the Department of Information of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China or the corresponding authorized agency and an official letter from the media outlet where the journalist works are required.

The applicant must contact the Press Office of the Embassy or Consulate General of China in advance and complete the necessary formalities.

This visa is issued to family members of Chinese citizens or foreign citizens with permanent residency who come to China for family reunification or for those who come to China for guardianship purposes.

The duration of stay in China exceeds 180 days.

Family members: spouses, parents, sons, daughters, spouses of sons or daughters, brothers, sisters, grandparents, grandchildren, and parents-in-law.

For family reunification, the following documents are required:

  1. Invitation letter from a Chinese citizen or foreign citizen with permanent residency in China, which includes:
    • Information about the invitee (full name, gender, date of birth, passport number, etc.)
    • Information about the planned visit (purpose of the trip, dates of arrival and departure, places and duration of stay, description of the relationship between the invitee and the inviting person, financial sources to cover expenses),
    • – Information about the inviting individual (name, contact number, address, signature),
  2. Copy of the Chinese ID or foreign passport and permanent residency of the inviting person.
  3. Original and copy of documents (marriage certificate, birth certificate, certificate of kinship issued by the public security authority or notarized certificate) proving the family relationship between the person applying for the visa and the inviting person.

Family members include spouses, parents, sons, daughters, sons-in-law, daughters-in-law, brothers, sisters, grandparents, grandchildren, and parents-in-law.

For guardianship, the following documents are required:

  1. Document of guardianship establishment issued by the Chinese embassy or consulate abroad or the government agency responsible for guardianship, notarized and certified in the country of residence or in China
  2. Original and copy of the sender’s passport or passports, as well as the original and copy of documents (marriage certificate, birth certificate, certificate of kinship issued by the public security authority or notarized certificate) proving the family relationship between the parents or guardians and the children
  3. Consent to guardianship issued by the authorized person who agrees to provide guardianship in China, as well as a copy of their ID
  4. Copy of the document confirming the permanent residence of the parents abroad during the child’s birth, if both parents or one of them are Chinese citizens.

Please note: Those who receive a “Q1” visa must apply for a residency permit at the local public security bureau within 30 days of entering China.

This visa is issued to those who are coming to China to visit their Chinese or foreign relatives with permanent residency.

The duration of stay in China does not exceed 180 days.

  1. Written invitation from a Chinese citizen or foreign citizen with permanent residency in China, which includes:
    • Information about the invitee (full name, gender, date of birth, passport number, etc.)
    • Information about the planned visit (purpose of the trip, dates of arrival and departure, places to be visited, description of the relationship between the invitee and the inviting person, financial sources to cover expenses)
    • Information about the private individual (name, contact phone number, address, signature of the inviting private individual)
  2. Copy of the Chinese ID or foreign passport and permanent residency of the inviting person
  3. Copy of the document confirming the family relationship between the invitee and the inviting person
This visa is also issued to those who possess exceptional talents and highly professional skills that are in high demand in China.

For those applying for the visa, they must provide certificates that meet the specific rules and requirements of the competent authorities of the Chinese government, which demonstrate their exceptional talents and highly professional specialties that are in high demand in China.

The visa is also issued to those who are visiting foreigners who work or study in China, if the person is a spouse, parent, or child under 18 years old, as well as a parent of the foreigner’s spouse. It is also issued to those who are visiting China for personal reasons.

The duration of stay in China exceeds 180 days.

  1. A written invitation from a private individual (foreigner residing or working in China) which includes:
    • Information about the invitee (full name, gender, date of birth, passport number, etc.)

  2. Photocopy of the inviting individual’s passport and residence permit.
  3. Original and photocopy of documents (marriage certificate, birth certificate, proof of relationship issued by the public security agency or notarized) to prove family ties between the visa applicant and the inviting individual.

Family members include spouses, parents, sons and daughters under 18 years old, and parents of spouses.

Note: Those who receive an “S1” visa must apply for a residence permit within 30 days of entering the country at the local public security office in the intended place of residence.

This visa is issued to those who wish to visit foreigners working or studying in China, as well as those who intend to visit China for other personal reasons.

The duration of stay in China does not exceed 180 days.

Family members: spouses, parents, sons, daughters, spouses of sons or daughters, brothers, sisters, grandparents, grandchildren, and parents-in-law.

For family members visiting for a short period of time, the following documents are required:

  1. Copy of the inviting individual’s valid passport and residence permit or visa
  2. Invitation letter from the inviting private individual (foreigner residing or working in China) which includes:
    • Information about the invitee (full name, gender, date of birth, passport number, etc.)
    • Information about the planned visit (purpose of the trip, dates of arrival and departure, places to be visited, description of the relationship between the invitee and the private individual, financial sources to cover expenses)
    • Information about the private individual (name, contact phone number, address, signature of the inviting private individual)
  3. Photocopy of the inviting individual’s passport and residence permit.
  4. Original and photocopy of documents (marriage certificate, birth certificate, or proof of relationship notarized) to prove family ties between the visa applicant and the inviting individual.

For trips for personal reasons, documents regarding the purpose of the trip must be provided in accordance with the requirements of the consular office staff.

What applicants need to know

Except in the cases where the original is required, the invitation letter can be sent by fax, as a copy, or in printed form. However, the consular officer may require the applicant to provide the original invitation letter depending on specific circumstances.

If necessary, consular officers may require the applicant to provide other documents or additional materials depending on specific circumstances, or invite the applicant to an in-person interview.

Consular officers make decisions regarding visa issuance, as well as the validity period, duration of stay, and number of entries based on the specific circumstances of the applicant.

Since preparing the necessary documents for a visa, booking an appointment to submit them for review, reviewing the documents, and issuing the visa all take time, we recommend planning your trip to China in advance and allowing sufficient time to apply for a visa.

If you fall under one of the following situations, you do not need to apply for a visa. In all other cases, a visa is required.

  • Foreign citizens covered by various visa-free agreements. China and the country of which you are a citizen have signed an “Agreement on facilitation of travel of citizens
  • Foreign citizens with valid permanent residence permits in China.
  • Foreign citizens with various valid temporary residence permits.
  • 24-hour visa-free transit without leaving the transit zone in the city.
  • – Visa-free entry for foreigners in tour groups to Hainan, visa-free entry for cruise ships to Shanghai, visa-free entry to Guangdong from Hong Kong and Macau, as well as visa-free entry to Guilin and Guangxi for ASEAN tour groups.
  • Foreign citizens with valid APEC Business Travel Cards. The virtual APEC Business Travel Card will resume entry function from May 1, 2023.

Visas are issued in many cities, and you can find the full list on the website https://avas.mfa.gov.cn/ Applicants can book an appointment at the Embassy of China or any of the Consulates depending on availability. You can apply at any of the following locations

Embassies and Consulates have launched online visa application forms and an online appointment system. The first step is to fill out the visa application form online at http://cova.mfa.gov.cn. After filling out the form and submitting it, print out the “Confirmation Page for Online Visa Application for the People’s Republic of China” (it must be printed on one page, and if an error occurs after clicking “Submit,” you need to fill it out again) and the “Visa Application Form of the People’s Republic of China.” The applicant must sign at the bottom of the confirmation page and in section 9 of the visa application form. The second step is to make an appointment online for the date of submitting the documents for the visa application at http://avas.cs.mfa.gov.cn. If you are unable to schedule an appointment on a suitable date for submitting visa documents at the Chinese Embassy in Russia or Consulate General, we recommend the following:

  • Check the availability of free appointment slots on the website of other Consulates or the Embassy and choose a more suitable date for submitting visa documents. Visa applicants can schedule appointments online at the Embassy or any Consulate, regardless of their district affiliation.
  • Embassies and Consulates with a high volume of visa applications usually use a combination of “long-term allocation of appointment slots” and “short-term allocation of appointment slots”. This allows them to fully release visa quotas for the next one to two months for those who have planned to travel to China in the next one to two months. They also use a combination of regular or irregular “allocation of appointment slots” every week for document submission or additional document submission for the current or next week, for those who have just decided to travel to China.

Please be aware of fraudulent activities. Some intermediaries use false information to intercept appointment quotas and sell them to visa applicants. Applicants often receive visa rejections due to discrepancies between the information provided in the visa application form and the actual applicant, or because the intermediary was unable to find a “buyer” in time, resulting in a large number of quotas being wasted, which seriously disrupts the appointment booking process. We recommend that visa applicants plan their trip to China in advance, allow sufficient time for visa application, consciously resist dishonest intermediaries, and work together to create a favorable atmosphere for obtaining visas.

No, online visa application is only for completing the online form and you still need to schedule an appointment to submit your documents for visa processing through the website http://avas.cs.mfa.gov.cn. After successfully booking, go to the corresponding embassy or consulate at the chosen time to submit your materials for visa processing.

In the following situations, there is no need to book an appointment online to submit your visa application documents, you can submit them at the agreed time without prior reservation:

  1. Diplomatic or official passport holders; Russian citizens going to China for diplomatic or state activities, notes from the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs or diplomatic missions will have priority.
  2. Relatives of employees of Russian diplomatic missions in China going to China to visit relatives; notes from the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, diplomatic missions, consular offices and written invitations from permanent members during their term of service will have priority.
  3. Individuals with a “Confirmation Letter of High-level Talents” apply for an R visa.
  4. Persons who have received a separate notification or publication from the Chinese Embassy in the host country or the Consulate General.

If you cannot personally provide the materials for your visa application, you can entrust another person or agency to submit the materials for your visa application.

Please note:

  1. Currently, the embassy and consulates in the host country are gradually resuming the function of collecting biometric fingerprints. The embassy or consulates may require the applicant to personally come to the embassy to have their fingerprints taken in accordance with the process of resuming this function. Please pay attention to the notifications on the embassy and consulates’ websites about the resumption of the collection of biometric fingerprint data.
  2. The embassy or consulates may ask the applicant to come to the embassy for an interview depending on the applicant’s situation.

When applying for a visa at the Chinese Embassy or Consulate in the host country, the applicant must be in the host country. The Chinese Embassy and Consulates have fully resumed the acceptance of visa applications for all types of visas, and have also restored the requirements for materials, including the initial requirements for some types of visas. Please see “All Types of Visas in China” above.

When submitting materials for a visa, you do not need to provide a paper photo. When filling out the “Visa Application Form” online, upload an electronic version of the photo for the identity document in accordance with the requirements of the website. Be sure to check the resolution and size of the photo, and make sure that your entire head, including hair and hairstyle, is included in the photo.

When submitting a visa application, the staff of the Chinese Embassy or Consulate in Russia will issue a ticket for visa collection with a specified date for collection. Under normal circumstances, applicants can go to the relevant Embassy or Consulate to pay for and collect the visa on the date specified on the visa collection ticket.

Please note that the visa collection ticket is a confirmation of the acceptance of materials for visa processing, but does not guarantee automatic visa issuance. You will receive more detailed information in the window where the visa collection ticket is issued.

The expedited visa processing service is charged separately. Among them, there is a super-fast visa issuance service where the visa is issued on the next working day after the visa application is accepted, an urgent visa issuance service where the visa is issued on the second working day after the visa application is accepted, and a normal visa issuance service where the visa is issued on the fifth working day after the visa application is accepted. Therefore, if the visa application materials are submitted on April 3rd, the super-fast visa issuance service will be available on April 4th, the urgent visa issuance service will be available on April 5th, and the normal visa issuance service will be available on April 10th. Please note: the processing of some visa applications may take a certain amount of time, and the expedited processing service may not be available. You will receive more detailed information from the staff when submitting the documents.

  1. Date of visa issuance: the visa becomes valid from this date. You can use the visa to enter China from this date until its expiration date.
  2. Expiration date (you must enter the country before this date): you must enter China before 23:59 Beijing time on this date, otherwise the visa will automatically become invalid.
  3. Duration of stay (you can stay in the country for XX days after entry): starting from the date of entry, this is the maximum number of days you are allowed to stay in China. The duration of stay for each entry with a multiple-entry visa is recalculated and does not accumulate.
  4. Number of entries: single (01), double (02), multiple (M), which means that during the validity period of the visa, you can use it to enter China once, twice, or several times.
  5. Please pay attention to additional markings on the visa. Holders of Z visas (except for visas marked “stay for 30 days after entry”), X1, Q1, S1, J1, D, and other types of visas must apply to local public security authorities for a residence permit within 30 days of entry.

Consulate staff make decisions on visa issuance, as well as on the type, validity, duration of stay, and number of entries, in accordance with each individual visa application. The visa type, validity, duration of stay, and number of entries indicated on the visa pick-up slip are only a preliminary conclusion. Payment is made when you receive the visa. Often, payment at the Chinese Embassy and Consulates can only be made by card.

Once the visa application is approved, it cannot be changed or extended.
